If you’ve ever dreamed of having a 3D printer, laser engraver, and CNC machine all in one sleek setup — the Snapmaker Artisan might be exactly what you’re looking for. I recently got my hands on this machine, and as a weekend DIYer, I’ve got to say: it’s impressive.
๐ Modular & Compact
What makes the Snapmaker Artisan special is its modular design. You can quick-swap between 3D printing, laser engraving, and CNC carving in just a few minutes. Instead of buying three separate machines and filling up your whole workshop, you get one sturdy, well-designed unit.
Despite being packed with features, the Artisan still has a relatively small footprint. With the full enclosure installed, it measures about 665 mm (W) × 943 mm (D) × 705 mm (H) — that’s roughly 26 × 37 × 28 inches. Without the enclosure, it’s a bit more compact at 580 mm × 620 mm × 634 mm. Just make sure you’ve got a sturdy table... otherwise, the wife’s never letting this thing in the house!
๐ป Luban Software: Clean & Beginner-Friendly
Snapmaker includes their own all-in-one software called Luban, and it’s surprisingly easy to use. It handles 3D printing, laser, and CNC projects all from one interface. The UI is clean and simple—great for beginners. And if you’re an advanced user, you can still opt for more professional software for each function.
Fun fact: The software is named after Lu Ban, a legendary Chinese inventor and craftsman from over 2,000 years ago—credited with creating early tools like saws and drills. Naming the software after him? Pretty fitting for a modern maker’s machine.
๐งช Real-World Testing
In my first tests:
-
I used the dual extrusion 3D printing module for the first time — and was impressed with the results.
-
I tried a depth map engraving using the laser head. Couldn’t get my hands on a brass coin in time, so I tested it on wood. Took just a few minutes and came out super clean with minimal char residue.
-
The CNC module is what I was most excited about. I selected the sample chess piece project and used the included material to test it out. Despite having no 4-axis experience, I followed the instructions to mount the part to the chuck and let it run. The job took about 1 hour and 30 minutes and came out way better than my FDM 3D prints. Should I make a full chess set next?
✅ Pros:
-
Modular — quick-swap between 3D, laser, and CNC
-
Compact — smaller than owning three separate machines
-
All-in-one software (Luban) makes workflow easier
-
Full enclosure for safety and less mess
-
All metal parts with powder coating for durability
❌ Cons:
-
Can only run one function at a time
-
Pricey compared to standalone machines
-
Requires a bit of a learning curve for new users
Final Thoughts ๐ฌ
If you're a high-production user, the Artisan might not be for you. But if you're a weekend DIYer like me? This machine is absolutely perfect. It’s versatile, sturdy, and inspiring to use.
thanks for the info, I am looking for a cnc machine recently
